CANOLA RESEARCH · New Product

The farmgate-to-benchmark monitor.

A weekly priced transparency product for African coffee and tea producers, cooperatives and processors — showing the benchmark indicator side by side with the farmgate price, so the people who actually grow the commodity can see whether the price they're being offered is fair.

The Product

One commodity. One benchmark. One honest weekly read.

Start with Kenyan coffee against the Nairobi Coffee Exchange indicator. Extend to tea and to other African commodity chains as the data access allows.

Live benchmark · weekly update

African Farmgate-to-Benchmark Monitor

A weekly report plus a simple dashboard that takes one commodity in one producing region and shows the benchmark indicator price alongside the typical farmgate-to-benchmark spread — what the benchmark was, what farmers were paid, and what that gap means for today's negotiation.

The first release covers Kenyan coffee against the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) indicator. The benchmark side uses publicly available data; the farmgate side is built from cooperative-reported and publicly documented ranges. Both are clearly labelled as to source and class.

Who It's For

Built for the people between the benchmark and the farmer.

The product answers one question every producer asks: "Am I getting a fair price?" Today, that question is answered by whoever the middleman is. This is the neutral, Nairobi-based, method-published alternative.

Coffee & tea cooperative societies

The aggregators that pay farmers and sell through NCE or Mombasa. They need to justify the farmgate price they set, and to negotiate with buyers from a position of knowing the benchmark.

Processors & export houses

Private tea processors and coffee washing stations/exporters that buy from farmers and need the benchmark to price their own purchases fairly and competitively.

Development organisations & food-security agencies

Agencies funding smallholder value-chain projects who want to measure and close the farmgate-to-benchmark gap. A 6-month study period is a natural fit.

Cooperative unions & regulator-adjacent bodies

Bodies that oversee multiple cooperatives and need a shared, neutral reference point for the benchmark-to-farmgate relationship across their membership.

Why This Beachhead

Nairobi proximity is the wedge.

A London-based data vendor can give a cooperative ICE coffee futures prices. It cannot tell that cooperative what the NCE indicator was last week and what that means for the farmer price they're about to set.

What Berube already has that makes this sellable today

  • ✓Nairobi base. Proximity and a trust profile that a foreign vendor cannot match for a Kenyan cooperative.
  • ✓Crop weather for Kenyan growing regions. Open-Meteo coverage — root-zone soil moisture, rainfall, FAO-56 evapotranspiration — for the Kenyan coffee belt and tea-growing zones. Growing-condition context goes alongside the price.
  • ✓Regional supply & demand matrix. 11 producing regions, 56 commodity cells — structural supply context for the commodity.
  • ✓Two years of price history. A real archive that can show the spread trend, not just today's snapshot.
  • ✓Public methodology + append-only scorecard. The honesty signal that makes a cooperative trust a neutrality claim more than a broker's word.
  • ✓Live global benchmark prices. The existing data feed covers the tradable benchmark side; the gap is the local auction/indicator data on the farmgate side.
The honest bit: this product does not require Berube to have a track record of trades, freight data, positioning data, or assessed physical prices. The transparency product is a research and public-data problem — the benchmark indicator vs the farmgate price — and that is exactly what Berube has today. The "days-old track record" problem does not block it.
Pricing

Priced to be a no-brainer for a cooperative.

The payback is one transparent negotiation. If the monitor helps a cooperative hold a fair farmgate price once, it has paid for a year.

Honest Limitations

What this product cannot do — and why that matters.

Exchange & auction data access is not confirmed as programmatic

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange and the Mombasa Tea Auction do not have confirmed public APIs. The first version of the monitor will use manually-collected weekly indicator prices — clearly labelled as such — or an unofficial scraper of the public results pages, also clearly labelled. We will not present scraped data as if it were an official feed.

Farmgate-to-benchmark spreads are seasonal and grade-dependent

There is no single "fair price" number. The monitor presents spreads as ranges and trends, with the source and class of each figure labelled. A cooperative using this product is getting a transparent reference point, not a guaranteed correct price.

This is a research and transparency product, not a trading platform

The monitor gives a cooperative visibility of the benchmark and the spread. It does not execute trades, manage portfolios, give personalised trading recommendations, or hold itself out as an investment adviser. The same "not investment advice" disclaimer that covers every Berube page applies here.

Contact routes are published, not verified
